In the referendum on the Act of Declaration of Independence held in Ukraine in 1991 92.3% of voters approved the declaration of independence proposed by the Ukrainian government.
Closer Alliance with Europe, Turning Away from Russia
The next major sign that Ukraine in its majority wanted to move closer to Europe became apparent in the Orange Revolution in 2004. The revolution demanded fair uncorrupted elections and succeeded. As a result Mr. Viktor Yushchenko became president through the repeated election with a clear majority.
Not all Ukrainians are pro-Europeans, but over the years the number of people who wanted closer ties with Russia has steadily increased and by 2023, due to violent and genocidal policies from Russia, the pro-Russian portion of the population has shrunken below 5%.
